Supreme Court to hear Arizona immigration case this week

Washington, D.C. – Arizona vs. USA promises to raise the controversy over illegal immigration as the 2012 presidential contest between President Barack Obama and presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney gets under way.

The 2010 Arizona law that directs police to determine proof of citizenship or immigration status where officers have a reasonable suspicion that the individual they detain is “unlawfully present” in the United States. The measure, put on hold by the lower courts, set off protests from Hispanics. It also galvanized support from illegal immigration opponents around similar measures in other states.

Obama promises to tackle immigration reform, first thing in his 2nd term

Cartagena de Indias, Colombia –  ”This is something I care deeply about…” “It’s personal to me.”  told President Barack Obama during an interview with Spanish network Univisión, referring to Immigration Reform. In a pledge to Hispanics in the U.S.A., he stated here Saturday he would seek an immigration reform during the first months of his second term in office, if elected. The President also made it clear that he will need the Congress positive involvement to tackle immigration policy in the first year of a second term. But he cautioned that he would need an amenable Congress to succeed.

Too many H-1B visas for foreign professionals

According to
U.S. Immigration Service officials, more than 67,000 H-1B visas for the 2013 fiscal year have not been granted because of the small number of applications. The window was opened on  April 2nd  and, as of today,  USCitizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has received only 1,.400 requests for ordinary share 65,000 visas, and 8,200 requests for additional quota of 20,000, which favors foreign professional graduates in American universities.

The USCIS said it will issue regular updates on the share and number of applications as well as extensive information on this visa, for foreign professionals. Prior to the 2008 financial crisis, the annual quota of 85,000 visas was usually completed in less than 48 hours after the opening of the window.

 

 

New bill would prevent illegal immigrants from receiving services

Atlanta, Georgia(AP) — A bill making its way through the Georgia Legislature could prevent illegal immigrants from getting marriage license or access to water and sewage service in the state.

The bill sponsored by Republican Senator Barry Loudermilk, has gotten lots of attention because it would also bar illegal immigrants from the public colleges, universities and technical schools. Another provision removes foreign passports from a list of identification documents that government agencies can accept for certain transactions. To be acceptable, foreign passports would have to be accompanied by federal immigration documentation proving someone is in the country legally.

Marco Rubio Calls DREAM Act the ‘Wrong Medicine,’ Pushes ‘Chain Migration’ Myth

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) took another jab at the DREAM Act late last week, calling it “the wrong medicine” for the immigration “problem” during in a radio interview with Geraldo Rivera.

Rubio also claimed that the DREAM Act would spark “chain immigration,” turning this pathway for undocumented students into open floodgates to citizenship for millions of their family members. This fear of a million-family-march across the border is an irresponsible image to evoke and, more importantly, isn’t true.

Venezuelans Seek a stop to deportations

José Anzola fled ‘ Venezuela seven years ago, like thousands. He would face deportation if an immigration judge denies his asylum request. “I am afraid of returning to  Venezuela,” he said.  Anzola left Venezuela after receiving death threats from Chavez supporters. In 2004 his car was shot on his way to work. “In the rallies I was threatened”, he said.
